assuming equal tech levels between 5-10 (second 30 minutes of normal games), this is the most efficent possible design: metal is processed at about 80% of the speed of mining, which is then exported at about 80% at the speed of processing (to allow for the movement of the miner)
exelsiar @ February 10, 2011, 7:50 pm
80% of mining? that means it'd stop targeting an asteroid after filling up, no? wouldn't it be better to be able to keep it mining at all times?
Superking @ February 11, 2011, 5:36 am
ideally yes, but in practice the orbitting behavior of miners is imperfect and they frequently drift out of range for a second or two.. 80% speed = continues processing while this happens. the other thing you have to remember is that making the mining laser even 0.25 bigger is going to need a bigger reactor, a bigger bridge & a bigger crew quarters.

ahh i getcha tis a gd design then :D

Do people actually use metal miners? I can usually just put the metal mandate on for a few seconds and I'll be swimming in metal if I am ever short

yea, but i like to use the "rigid" attribute as i almost never find the need to use civil actions anyways, so a good mining ship is a welcome addition to my system traffic. tho, out of personal preference i replaced the thruster with a ramjet to give it a boost in ruining time before it needs to refuel.
